What will we be learning today?


  • In this lesson, we are going to learn about minerals and the characteristics of minerals.

Can you name any minerals?


Some commonly known minerals are:


  • Diamonds

  • Gold

  • Silver

  • Graphite or "lead" in pencils

  • Rock Salt to melt ice or snow

  • Salt you put on your food

  • Cooper


Minerals are identified by characteristics:


  • Minerals are not living.

  • Minerals are formed in nature, not made in a laboratory.


More characteristics of Minerals:


  • Minerals are solids, with definite volume and shape (not a gas or liquid).

  • Crystal structure, particles of a mineral that line up in a pattern that repeat over and over again.





Uses for minerals




  • Make musical instruments


  • Make electrical wire


  • Make jewelry
