Reading and Writing Rocks Yellow / Lesson 1: Becoming a Writer

Prewriting

What will we be learning today?

In this lesson, we are going to think about being a writer.

The vocabulary word are author, genre, and brainstorming.

  Can you name any authors?

We will begin today's lesson, talking about what an author is.

What are these words?
  Author

An author is someone who writes for their living. They may write poetry, newspaper articles, sports     stories, books or even television stories!

  Genre

The genre an author uses means the type of writing the author likes to do. Some writers like to write      about true things, others like to make things up, some like to write things that rhyme or have a beat.

Do you like to write?
Think of things that you write each day.
   Notes to friends
   Dates on a calendar
   School assignments
Lists of things you have to do
   Doodles on a paper
   Songs
   Stories based on television programs
   Comic strips

Close your eyes for a moment. If you could write anything you wanted in any way that you wanted, what would that be? On a sheet of paper answer these two questions
1  Do you like to write?
2  What do you write now?
3  If you could write anything you wanted, what would it be?

What kinds of things do you need to know to be a good writer?
Learning to spell lots of words?
Knowing how to organize your writing (to put it in good order)?
Getting ideas about what you will write?
All of these things are important!

You are going to be working a lot on learning how to write a lot of different things. You have worked      on parts of speech. You recognize nouns, verbs, adjectives, sentences, subjects and      predicates. Those are all important parts of the writing process.
Now you are going to begin to think of other things you need to be great writers.
Answer this question on that same sheet of paper:

4  Are you a good writer? Why or why not?

Look at htese pictures:

Pick one of those pictures to be your subject. I will pick the cat. Draw your own version of that on your paper. Here is mine:

After you finish your drawing, write words all around your picture that describe it.

Let's Review What We Learned Today!
Author - writers for a lot of different kinds of books and papers
Gener - the kind of writing an author does
Brainstorming - the words that you put all around your picture all called brainstorming words. They      are simple words and phrases that remind you of special things about that picture. Brainstorming is      one of the ways that you work on writing about something. You think of as many things as you can      about that topic or picture and wrtie lots of things down about it.

On that same sheet of paper you have been working on, write three sentences about the picture     that you drew using ideas from your brainstorming words
