Reading and Writing Rocks Yellow / Lesson 17: Affixes

Affixes
What will we be learning today?

  • In this lesson, we are going to learn all about affixes.

  • The vocabulary word is affixes, suffixes, prefixes, and root word.

Affixes
What are these words?

  • Affixes       : sets of letter that only have meaning when added to another word. -ing is an                      affix.

  • Suffixes    : letter sets that are added to the end of a word to change its meaning

  • Prefixes    : letter sets that are added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning

  • Root word : a word that has nothing added at the beginning or the end. It stands on its own                      as a word, it has a meaning. New words can be made from root words by                      adding beginnings (prefixes) and endings (suffixes).

  • Here is a great root word to start your lesson.
  • play

  • Play is a great root word because a lot of different affixes can be added to it to change its meaning.

  • Let's add some suffixes and see what happens.

  • Here is another great root word.

  •           bat

  • But watch what is different with this root word.

  • Let's add some suffixes and see what happens.

  • Did you see what happened when -ed and -ing were added to the root word bat?

    • The t in bat was doubled when -ing and -ed were added.

    • That happened because there is a     short vowel right before the last consonant. When that happens, the last letter is doubled before adding -ing and -ed.

    • Here is another root word. Will its last letter need to be doubled?

                                                                         hop

    hop

  • Yes it will. There is a short vowel o right before the last consonant p. The p needs to be doubled     before adding -ing and -ed.

  • Here is a great root word to try something new with.

  •                                                              play

  • Play is a great root word because a lot of different affixes can be added to it to change its     meaning. We added suffixes now lets add a prefix.

  • The prefix re- means again. If you add it to a word, it means to do again.

  • Here is another prefix un-

  • The prefix un- means not. If you add it to a word, it means not done.
