Science_Lab_Yellow / Lesson 3: Planet Earth

Planet Earth
What will we be learning today?

  • In this lesson, we are going to learn all about the planet Earth.

Facts about Earth

  • Earth is the third planet from the Sun

  • Its day is 23.9 hours long - period of rotation - the amount of time it takes to complete one turn on its axis

  • Its year is 365.26 days long - period of revolution - the amount of time it takes to complete one orbit around the Sun

  • It is the only planet in the solar system know to support life

Information Found About Earth by Space Satellites

  • Earth has a strong magnetic field

  • Van Allen radiation belts - areas around Earth where particles from the Sun are trapped

  • Earth is an active planet, with earthquakes, volcanoes, and building and wearing of land masses

  • The atmosphere protects us only from small debris from space. It does not protect us from large objects.

What is Planet Earth Like?

  • Earth has solid surface layer, mostly covered by a layer of water, all surrounded by layers of gases

  • Lithosphere is the hard, outer layer of Earth

  • The rocky surface that make sup the top of the lithosphere is the crust

  • The crust includes the continents and the oceans floors

  • The crust includes the soil

What is Planet Earth Like?

  • Hydrosphere is Earth's water

  • Trillions of liters of water

  • There is so much water on Earth that it covers most of the lithosphere

  • Most of this water is called the ocean, which is salty.

  • The hydrosphere includes lakes, rivers, streams, underground water, and ice, which is fresh water we use for drinking, cooking and bathing.

  • Water acts like a big heat absorber- keeping Earth's temperatures from changing too drastically

What is Planet Earth Like?

  • Atmosphere is many layers of gases that surround Earth

  • Atmosphere contains oxygen needed for living things on Earth

  • Also contains other gases that help protect Earth from forms of harmful energy from the Sun

Let's Review What We Learned Today!

  • Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is covered by a layer of water

  • The entire planet is surrounded by a thin blanket of air

  • The Earth has a flattened circle orbit

  • Earth has a tilted axis

  • Earth is a globular planet

  • The Planet Earth is one of several planets to orbit the Sun.

  • The moon orbits Earth
