Discover_our_World_Yellow / Lesson 4: Direction Words

Direction Words

What will we be learning today?

In this lesson, we are going to learn all about telling directions on a map.

The vocabulary words are longitude, latitude, absolute location, cardinal directions,
     compass rose,
in-between locations

  Can you name these places?

We will begin today's lesson, by reviewing a few things from your last lesson.

What hemisphere do we live in? East or West?

What line runs around the center of the earth?

   How many continents are there?

What do these words mean?
Longitude               :  The lines that run up and down a map and globe.

Latitude                  :  The lines that run across a map and globe.

Absolute location  :  The place on a map and globe where the latitude and longitude lines cross                                               over a location.

What do these words mean?
Compass rose         :  The picture on a map and globe to show North, South, East, and                                                West.

Cardinal directions       :  The main directions we use: north, south, east, and west.

In-between directions  :  Directions that fall in-between the main directions of north, south,                                                      east, and west. In-between directions are northeast, southeast,                                                      southwest, and northwest.a location.

What are latitude lines?
The lines that run across   the map and globe are   called latitude lines.

The latitude lines go all   the way around the earth.

What are longitude lines?
The lines that run up and down   the map and globe are called   longitude lines.

They run up and down the long   way. Can you see the word long   in the word   longitude.

Put the lines together.
When the latitude and longitude   lines are put together they make a   grid. You have used a grid in math to   make line graphs.

This grid makes it easy for everyone   to find a place on a globe or map.   This place on the grid is called the   absolute location. It is the place on   the grid that tells absolutely where   the place has to be.

Put the lines together.
When the lines are put on a globe they look   like this.

The latitude line is always read first. Latitude   lines go north and south on the earth.

The longitude line is always read second.   Longitude lines go east and west on the   earth.

What is a compass rose?
A compass rose tells where north, south, east, and west are. These four directions are called the cardinal directions. Each are labeled with the first letter of the word.

Look at this compass rose.
Can you find north?
Can you find west?
Can you find south?
Can you find east?

 What is a compass rose?
A compass rose tells where north, south, east, and west are.

There are in-between places on the compass rose. On this compass rose they are the blue points.

They are named by the two points they fall in-between.
NE is Northeast.
SE is Southeast.
SW is Southwest.
NW is Northwest.
Find these points on the compass rose.

Let's Review What We Learned Today!
Your worksheets will have use latitude and longitude lines to find places.

Latitude is always written first and runs north and south on the earth.

You will label a compass rose with cardinal directions and in-between directions.

Cardinal directions are north, south, east, and west.

In-between directions are northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest
