7th Grade Language Arts / Introduction to Independent Reading

What is Independent Reading (IR) and Why is it Important?

Independent Reading (IR) is exactly what the name implies.  It is reading that you do on your own.  Reading is an important skill you will need throughout your lifetime.  Reading materials you chose yourself about topics that interest you will help to strengthen this skill.

Materials can be found in many places including, but not limited to:

         Your home

         Public library

         Bookstore

On-line links provided at the end of this lesson and duplicated in the "links" section of your Language Arts course.

Although you chose reading materials yourself, Independent Reading is a required part of your classroom activities.

You must complete at least 50 points of IR each grading period to earn full IR credit.

You may complete up to another 20 points of IR as extra credit each grading period, if you wish.

What Do I Read for IR?

I can't stress strongly enough - IR materials will not be assigned to you.  You chose them yourself from materials that are interesting to you.

All materials will be accepted unless they are not school appropriate! If you question the appropriateness of an IR material, please contact me before submitting it!
