Definition of a noun


  • A noun is a naming word. A noun is used as the subject in a sentence. Nouns can name 4 things :

    1.a person
    2.a place
    3.a thing
    4.an idea




  •                            Nouns can name both living and non-living things.
    Nouns name things that can be seen like this elephant
    Nouns can name ideas that can't be seen - like patriotism

Compound Nouns
  • Compound nouns are TWO or more words used together as ONE noun.

  • Compound nouns can be written as one word, as separate words or as hyphenated words.

    Examples of Compound Nouns

    mail carrier (separate words)
    mail + carrier
    Classroom (1 word)
    class + room
    Football (1 word)
    foot + ball
    eleven-year-old (hyphenated word)
    eleven + year + old

    Compound nouns still name a person, place, thing or idea!


  • Common & Proper Nouns


    • Common Nouns
      1. A Common Nouns is a general name for a person, place, thing or idea.
      2. A common noun begins with a capital letter ONLY if it is the first word in a sentence or if it     is part of a title.
    Proper Nouns


    • Proper noun
      1. A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place, thing or idea.
      2. A proper noun ALWAYS begin with a capital letter.
