7th Grade Language Arts / Lesson 2.2.2: Pronouns(Day 2)

Object Pronouns
What are Object pronouns

Object pronouns are pronouns that can serve the following functions in a sentence :

Object Pronouns as Direct Objects

  • The direct object in a sentence receives the action of a verb.
Example : Mrs. Gomez picked Jen.
Jen is the direct object because it shows who received the action of the verb                  "picked."
Let's substitute an object pronoun (remember all those colored words on the second slide?) for the direct object "Jen".

  • Now the sentence reads : Mrs. Gomez picked her.

Object Pronouns as Object of the Preposition

Prepositions relate a noun or pronoun to another word in the sentence.

Example : The ball went past John.
The word "past" is a preposition, and it relates the "noun" John to the word "went."
"John" is the object of the preposition.
Let's substitute an object pronoun for the object of the preposition, John.

  • Now the sentence reads : The ball went past him.
