7th Grade Language Arts / Lesson 4.9.2: Synonyms (DAY 2)

Connotation and Synonyms

When choosing synonyms, you need to consider the connotation of the word, too.

Connotation is the suggestive meaning of a word or the emotions attached to a word.

Examples:

"Grab" means to "take quickly" but the connotation is more.  "Grab"  has the connotation of greed and rudeness.  "Take quickly" does not.

In the following, choose the word that is most similar to the underlined word.

 the crowd downtown

  • pack
  • rabble
  • swarm
  • throng

 The correct answer is throng.

  • swarm = group moving together
  • rabble = loud mob; a pack
  • throng = large number of people
  • pack = group of animals; group of people with a common interest

"crowd" and "throng" both share the connotation of an unorganized group of people who happen to be in the same place at the same time.  The other words suggest something more in common.
