7th Grade Language Arts / Lesson 5: Sequencing

Sequence of Events

The order or sequence of events can be very important:

  • It will help you understand why the author wrote the story or article
  • It will help you understand why things happened in a story or article
  • It will help you understand and remember what happened in a story or article.

Chronological Order

When authors write a story or article, they sometimes place events in the order they happened, but sometimes they don't.

As the reader, it is you job to put things in order so you have a clear picture of what happened when.

Here are some hints to help you place things in the order they happened.

  • Look for dates that will help you put events in order
  • Picture the order in which events occurred.  Does one lead to another?
  • Look for words that indicate the order if which events occurred - first, second, third, before, during, after, next, and then.
