Definition of an Adverb


    Review
    Remember...when a word is modified by an adjective or an adverb, it's meaning is changed in some way.

  • An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb.

    Examples : The adverb is in blue italics .

  • Adverbs answer several question when they modify verbs. The adverbs are in blue italics.

  • When adverbs modify adjectives or other adverbs, they answer the question to what extent?

How to Tell an Adverb from an Adjective


  • Sometimes it can be hard to tell an adverb from an adjective.

    1. Some words can be used as an adverb in one sentence and as an adjective in another.

    2. Someone might tell you that any word that ends in -ly is an adverb.

    DON'T BELIEVE IT!!!


    Some adjectives are formed by adding -ly to a noun.
    friendly
    princely
    shapely
