  • They also have a solution which is an answer to the problem

  • Being able to identify the problem and solution in the story will make it more interesting and more fun to read!

Problems and Solutions

  • As you read, you will probably find there are many other problems in addition to the most important or central one.

  • Various steps or actions may be taken to solve a problem before a final solution is reached.

Identifying Problems and Solutions
Read the following selection and try to identify the problem and solution.

  • Growing up in Queens in the 60's and 70's Francie Berger knew exactly what she wanted from life: more Lego building bricks. She got her first set when she was three. Gradually, she added to her holding. She liked to build houses, and she wanted to build bigger ones. As a teen-ager, she began writing to Lego Systems, Inc. to ask if she could order, say, two million standard red bricks. The company told her no. In college she majored in architecture, figuring that building real houses was the adult occupation that came closest to her favorite activity. She wrote more letters. At some point, it occurred to her that she might be able to get a job at Lego itself. She began calling the company every month and once dropped by its headquarters in Enfield, Connecticut....Undeterred she spent part of her senior year using Lego bricks to build a scale model of a farm. The model served both as her senior project and as a job application. Seeing no way out, Lego hired her, in 1984, for a three-week trial period. She has been with the company ever since.
