Reading Skills Summarizing
What Will I Learn Today?

  • Today you will learn to tell briefly and in your own words the main ideas of a reading selection.

  • When you summarize you condense the ideas of the writer in to a short, precise statement that leaves out unimportant details.

 Summarizing Strategies

  • Some summarizing strategies are :
    1. Read the selection
    2. Identify main ideas - answer questions "who?" "what?" "where?" "when?" and "why?"
    3. Briefly restate the information so it can easily be remembered
