7th Grade Math / Lesson 5A: Scientific Notation

What will we be learning in this unit?

  • In this lesson you will learn about scientific notation.

Vocabulary words are found in this purple color throughout the lesson. Remember to put these in your notebook.

Standard form of a number is the way we see and use numbers on a regular basis.

Scientific Notation is a way of writing very large values and very small values more efficiently.
Like this: 54,300,000 can be written as 5.43 X 107

    Scientific Notation has two parts:
  • The first part needs to be a value that is at least 1 and less than 10.

  • The second part is a power of 10

*Hint: The exponent is the same as the number of times the decimal point moves in the original number.
