7th Grade Social Studies / Lesson 2 - How to take notes in History

What will we be learning today?

  • In this lesson, we are going to learn all about how to take notes.
  • If you see a vocabulary word it will always be highlighted in green.
Can you name an important study habit?

  • Taking good notes is a good way to study more efficiently.
  • We will begin today's lesson, by reviewing how to take notes from the computer and how to study for this Social Studies class.

How to take Notes off the computer:

  • When you are in a lesson on the computer there are a couple programs you will be using for Social Studies.
  • These programs are: Power Point Presentations, United Streaming Movies, Brainpop movies, and Digital Text book.
  • It is ALWAYS important to READ the directions VERY thoroughly and carefully before starting a lesson!
  • When ever you see a word in green in a power point lesson, you need to copy the word and the definition into your notebook in the Social Studies section.

How to take Notes off the computer:
  • Before you start a lesson each day, you will come to your first page on the unlimitedclassroom.net.
  • After clicking on your locker, you will see a page that has a list of words you need to know for the day. Those words will also appear at the end of lessons on PowerPoint.
  • If your lesson is on a digital book, the words that you need to know for the lesson will be given to you before you start that particular lesson.

How to take Notes off the computer:
  • ALWAYS read directions to each lesson before starting that lesson for the day.
  • If YOU DO NOT READ DIRECTIONS you will get lost and do the lesson incorrectly and lose points for that lesson.
  • ALWAYS copy words and definitions into your notebook.
  • Also if there is something important in the lesson that you think you need to know or it will help you learn about the lesson more, copy it down into your notebook.
  • You can use abbreviations to help you write notes.

How to Use Abbreviations for taking notes:
  • There are easy ways to help you remember a lesson you just learned about for the day.
  • Take more notes than asked for, if it will help you remember each lesson.
  • Each student is different, and learns at a different pace, one student may have to take more notes than another, or they may take longer to get through a lesson than another student.
  • When you take notes, abbreviating certain words may save you time. For example: Social Studies- S.S., The United States of America- U.S.A.
  • Taking out words such as: the, is, if, so, etc. may help you write notes and save time.

How to Study for your Social Studies Class:
  • A good way to stay on task and ahead of the game is to review EACH and EVERY day what you learned.
  • After you have taken notes each day on a lesson, take time after to re-read the notes that you wrote down in your notebook.
  • At the end of each week, go back over each lesson from the entire week to help re-fresh you memory of what you have learned so far in your class.
  • Remember if you have any questions dealing with your Social Studies class let me know! I will get back to you as soon as it is possible for me.
