The Continental Army was created by a resolution of the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775. It was intended to coordinate the war effort of the thirteen colonies against Britain. General George Washington was Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army.

Life in the Continental Army was not easy. In the early months of the revolution the soldiers were newly recruited. Many were farmers or shop keepers. They were scared and had never faced battle before in their lives. Initially, the soldiers lacked training and discipline. They were not professional soldiers like the British troops. They had left their families to defend their newly formed country from the British. They were often poorly armed. They had very little practice in drilling, battle formation or strategy. From these humble beginnings, the Continental Army was turned into a major fighting force capable of defeating the British regular army.
